Allelopathy and Allelochemicals of Eragrostis plana (Poaceae) and its Relation with Phenology and Nitrogen Fertilization Planta Daninha
CECCHIN,K.; FAVARETTO,A.; SCHEFFER-BASSO,S.M.; BERTOL,C.D.; CHINI,S.O..
ABSTRACT This study was conducted in order to verify if the phenological stage and the nitrogen fertilization interfere in the allelopathic activity and in the concentration of potentially allelopathic phenolic compounds of tough lovegrass (Eragrostis plana). The assay consisted of a bifactor 3 (0.100 and 200 kg N ha-1) x 2 (harvested in vegetative and reproductive stages), in a split plot design. The N doses constituted the main plot and the phenological stage during the harvest the subplots, resulting in six treatments. The tough lovegrass plants derived from each of the treatments were subjected to allelopathy bioassays, in which aqueous extracts of the aerial parts were applied to lettuce cypselae (Lactuca sativa) and to phytochemicals tests when...

Effect of osmopriming on germination and initial growth of Physalis angulata L. under salt stress and on expression of associated genes Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOUZA,MANUELA O. DE; PELACANI,CLAUDINÉIA R.; WILLEMS,LEO A.J.; CASTRO,RENATO D. DE; HILHORST,HENK W.M.; LIGTERINK,WILCO.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effects of priming on seed germination under salt stress and gene expression in seeds and seedlings of P. angulata L. After priming for 10 days, seed germination was tested in plastic trays containing 15 ml of water (0 dS m-1 - control) or 15 ml of NaCl solution (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 dS m-1). Fresh and dry weight of shoots and roots of seedlings were evaluated at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 dS m-1. Total RNA was extracted from whole seeds and seedlings followed by RT-qPCR. The target genes selected for this study were: ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), thioredoxin (TXN), high affinity potassium transporter protein 1 (HAK1) and salt overly sensitive 1 (SOS1). At an electroconductivity of 14 dS...

Germination of Miconia ligustroides (Melastomataceae) diaspores submitted to different treatments for dormancy overcoming Rev. Bras. Bot.
Chaves,Izabel de Souza; Alvarenga,Amauri Alves de; Dousseau,Sara; Soares,Giuliana Cristina Mourão; Souza,Elma dos Santos; Artur,Mariana Aline Silva.
To assess the germination behavior of Miconia ligustroides (DC.) Naudin, diaspores were submitted to different regimes of temperature, light and substrate. Due to intrinsic low germination of the diaspores, they were submitted to treatments that aimed to overcome endogenous and exogenous dormancy. Miconia ligustroides presents complex dormancy and to overcome it is recommended to soak the diaspores in H2SO4 diluted at 75% for 5 minutes, wash it and then soak it in a solution of 400 mg L-1 of GA3 for 12 hours. Seeding should be done on Germtest® paper at 25 °C.

How and why to measure the germination process? Rev. Bras. Bot.
Ranal,Marli A.; Santana,Denise Garcia de.
In the last two centuries, papers have been published including measurements of the germination process. High diversity of mathematical expressions has made comparisons between papers and some times the interpretation of results difficult. Thus, in this paper is included a review about measurements of the germination process, with an analysis of the several mathematical expressions included in the specific literature, recovering the history, sense, and limitations of some germination measurements. Among the measurements included in this paper are the germinability, germination time, coefficient of uniformity of germination (CUG), coefficient of variation of the germination time (CVt), germination rate (mean rate, weighted mean rate, coefficient of...

Reproductive phenology and germination of Eleocharis laeviglumis R. Trevis. & Boldrini (Cyperaceae) Acta Botanica
Demeda,Camila Luisa Bernhardt; Seger,Guilherme Dubal dos Santos; Steiner,Neusa; Trevisan,Rafael.
ABSTRACT Aquatic macrophytes are important components of freshwater ecosystems, of which Cyperaceae is the most diverse family. Many species of Cyperaceae form dense populations along lake margins of the southern coast of Brazil, but little is known about their sexual reproductive strategies. We characterized the reproductive life cycle of Eleocharis laeviglumis, an abundant emergent macrophyte of coastal wetlands in southern Brazil, by assessing its reproductive phenophases and estimating the number of its flowers and potentially viable fruits per inflorescence in a natural population. We also tested seed germinability and vigor for a period of four months during a single reproductive season. The species possesses dichogamous and protogynous spikelets...

Seed size influence on germination responses to light and temperature of seven pioneer tree species from the Central Amazon Anais da ABC (AABC)
Aud,Fabiana F.; Ferraz,Isolde D.K..
In Amazon secondary forests are dominated by pioneer species that typically produce large amounts of small and dormant seeds that are able to form a persistent soil seed bank. Seed dormancy in this group of species is overcome by environmental conditions found in open areas, such as high irradiation or alternating temperatures. Nevertheless, a variety of germination responses to environmental factors is known among pioneers; some of them may germinate in diffuse light or in darkness condition at constant temperature. Seed mass can be considered as one of the factors that promotes this variety. Regarding species with very small seeds, it seems that the trigger for germination is light and for larger seeds temperature alternation may be a more important...

Tetrazolium test for evaluating triticale seed viability Rev. bras. sementes
Souza,Camila Ribeiro de; Ohlson,Osvaldo de Castro; Gavazza,Melícia Ingredi Araújo; Panobianco,Maristela.
Freshly harvested triticale seeds are usually dormant, making the immediate evaluation of the physiological potential of seed lots difficult. We evaluated different triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) test methods for rapidly determining the viability of four seed lots of x.Triticosecale Wittmack cultivar IPR111. The test variables were: Preconditioning, (i) placing whole seeds between moistened paper towels or (ii) directly soaking the seeds in water, both procedures being conducted at 20 ºC for 18 hours; Post-conditioning seed preparation, (i) longitudinal bisection of the seed through the embryo with one half being stained and the other discarded or (ii) longitudinal bisection with both halves being stained; Staining for three and four hours, in the...

Unveiling the germination requirements for Cereus hildmannianus (Cactaceae), a potential new crop from southern and southeastern Brazil Acta Botanica
Becker,Rafael; Ri,Leandro Dal; Farias-Singer,Rosana; Singer,Rodrigo Bustos.
ABSTRACT Cereus hildmannianus K. Schum is a columnar cactus native to South and Southeast Brazil. The cultivation of this species seems justifiable for several reasons: its fruits are spineless and edible; it is not threatened with extinction; it naturally occurs in Pampa and Atlantic Forest under non-xeric conditions that may be unsuitable for the cultivation of other tropical cacti; and the plants are pollinator-dependent and so should benefit from native pollinators. This study aimed to test seed germination of C. hildmannianus with samples collected at three different localities in southern Brazil, as a necessary step preceding any attempts of management and domestication. Seeds were exposed to temperatures of 20° C, 25° C, 30° C and room temperature....
